Schedule 5 - Line 315

Recommended Posts

Before I purchase this product for the upcoming year, are you able to advise if the issue with the caregiver amount not showing up in Schedule 5 has been resolved?

Last year, I was required to also file adjustments with my clients returns because of this and I'd like to avoid that this year.

Thank you!

Hello jessicaodonnell,

In order to claim the caregiver amount, you must first add the person as a dependant, even if he or she is not a dependant. You can add more than one person if you were the caregiver for these individuals.

To add a dependant to your file, please follow the steps below:

1. Under the "Interview" tab, on line "Family head" or the first person, click "Add a dependant" which is located to the right on this line,

2. Complete the "Dependant Identification" page. Please note that it is not possible to indicate in the field "Marital status" that the dependant is married or has a common-law spouse, because you cannot file the tax returns of the couple within your file. Therefore, in your file, you must choose "single" as the marital status of the dependant. To file the tax return of a dependant who has a spouse, you must do it in a separate family.

3. Even if you have to add the dependant to your file in order to claim an amount for this person, please know that you are not required to file his or her tax return along with yours. In the "Dependant identification" page on the line "Does this taxpayer require a tax return?", answer "No" in the field located on your right.

Once you have entered the dependant's information, please follow these steps:

1. In the "Left-side menu on the Interview tab" of the dependant's file, select "Medical and disability".

2. In the screen to your right, choose the option "Infirmity and disability amounts for the dependant" if this person is disabled and enter the required information in the page that appears.

3. Again, in the screen entitled "Dependant's medical expenses, infirmity and disability" located to your right, choose the option "Caregiver amount to claim for this dependant (line 315)".

4. A new page entitled "Caregiver Amount" will open, and in the drop-down menu on the right-hand side of the line "Who should claim the natural caregiver amount for this dependant?", select the person claiming the caregiver amount. Please note that this credit can be shared.

The program will generate Schedule 5 and complete the "Line 315 - Caregiver amount" section. The result on line 7 will then be carried over to line 315 of federal Schedule 1.

Hello,

I followed the instruction to add a dependent and so on.   But the option to select 'Caregiver amount to claim for this dependent (line 315)' is still not showing in the 'Dependent's medical expenses, infirmity and disability' screen.    It used to work last year, but not this year for the 2017 tax year.   Please help.

Thanks.

Hello Francisco,

Consolidation of Caregiver Credits

For 2017 and subsequent taxation years, the Federal budget proposes to consolidate these three credits as part of the new Canada caregiver credit (CCC).

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/programs/about-canada-revenue-agency-cra/federal-government-budgets/budget-2017-building-a-strong-middle-class/consolidation-caregiver-credits.html

1- Canadian caregiver amount for a spouse or common-law partner, or for an eligible dependent aged 18 or over (line 304)

2- Canadian caregiver amount for other dependents aged 18 or older with disabilities (line 307)

3- Canadian caregiver amount for children under 18 years of age with disabilities. Enter the number of children for whom you are claiming this amount. Box 352 --- x $ 2,150 = (line 367)

Hello Francisco,

Caregiver amount - Line 315 - Federal

The federal government removed line 315 and replaced it with line 307 which will be titled "Canada caregiver amount".

In addition, the federal government has added a new condition, "The person must have impairment".

As a result, you cannot claim an amount for dependants who do not have impairment in physical or mental functions, including a parent or grandparent who was 65 years of age or older.

We suggest that you carefully read line 307 of the 2017 General Income Tax and Benefit Guide.

Hello Julieali,

Canada caregiver amount - Line 307 - Federal

The federal government changed the scope of the definition of caregiver by adding that the person must have impairment.

As a result, the federal government abolished line 315 and replaced it with line 307.

As a result, you cannot claim an amount for dependants who do not have impairment in physical or mental functions, including a parent or grandparent who was 65 years of age or older.

We suggest that you carefully read line 307 of the 2017 General Income Tax and Benefit Guide.

See the following link for the General Income Tax and Benefit Guide:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/tax-packages-years/general-income-tax-benefit-package/5000-g.html

 2. On the page generated on the right, click on the plus ?+? icon to the right of the line "Infirmity and disability amounts for the dependant".

3. On the page entitled "Dependant's infirmity and disability", enter the required information. On this page, you must indicate that the person has a disability, and to do so you must answer the question "Does the dependant's disability provide entitlement to the federal family caregiver amount?".

4. It should be noted that the CRA may ask for a signed statement from a medical practitioner indicating the nature of the impairment. The note should also indicate that this person depends on others because of this deficiency of physical or mental functions.

5. At the bottom of the "Dependant's infirmity and disability" page, you can share this amount with your spouse by answering the last four (4) questions.

The program will generate Schedule 5 and will complete the sections that best apply to the dependant's income. In addition, the "Disability amount" will be transferred to line 318 of your federal Schedule 1 if the dependant's income is not too high.

Followed all Antoine7's instructions and everything worked well except that for Schedule 5, for a dependent older than 18 and with zero income, it would populate the $6883 for line 307 but not the $2150 for line 305. Can u offer any help. Thx

Hi,

Amount for an eligible dependent
You may be able to claim this amount if, at any time in the year, you met all of the following conditions at once:

* You do not have a spouse or common-law partner;
* You supported a dependant in 2017;
* You lived with the dependant in a home that you maintained. You cannot claim this amount for a person who was only visiting you.

In addition, at the time you met the above conditions, the dependant must also have been either.

* Your parent or grandparent by blood relationship, marriage, common-law partnership or adoption;
* Your child, your grandchildren, brother or sister and she is under18 years of age or has, an impairment in physical or mental functions.

To claim the amount for an eligible dependant, you must first create the dependant's file.To create this file, follow the steps below:

1. On the "Interview" tab, click on "Add dependant" on the line to the right;

2. On the page entitled "Dependant identification", enter the dependant's information. Please note that the lines preceded by a red asterisk are mandatory fields.

3. If the dependant is an adult, you must complete the page
"CRA questions", as well as the "Revenu Québec questions" for residents of Quebec and claim the solidarity tax credit.

4. If you have multiple several dependents, repeat step 1.

Once the dependant's file has been created, and you meet the eligibility criteria (see link below), the program will make the claim for the eligible dependant amount automatically with no additional entries required.

If you have 2 or more children, the program will automatically select the child for whom the eligible dependant amount will be claimed. However, if you want to choose a specific child for this claim, please follow these steps:

1. In the "Left-side menu on the Interview tab" of the child's file, located on the left-hand side, click on "Controls".

2. Then, on the page appearing on the right, select "Let MaxBack decide" to the question "Claim this dependant as the eligible dependant on federal Schedule 1 line 305?".

The program will claim the eligible dependant amount on line 305 of Schedule 1 of the Federal return, and line 5816 of your provincial forms (other than Quebec, which does not have an equivalent form).

For additional information on the eligible dependent amount, please consult this link:

http://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-305-amount-eligible-dependant.html
