By default, the program determines the last date of medical expenses as being December 31st of the tax year (e.g December 31, 2017)

If you wish to modify that date so that you can claim expenses from 2016 you have to pick a different date in 2017 (e.g. June 30, 2017) using the steps below and the program will allow you to go back 365 days from that date, but you can only go back the 365 days.  The program doesn't appear to give you a warning if you've entered medical expenses beyond the 365 days that it isn't counting.

1 - In the "Left side menu on the Interview tab", select "Medical, disability, caregiver".

2- On the screen on your right, select the line "Last date of medical expenses".

3- On the page that appears, enter the last date as follows: DD-MM-YYYY.

4- If you change the last date of medical expenses in your file, you must also specify the last date of medical expenses for all family members.

5- Enter a brief description of the medical expenses in the first field indicating DD-MM-YYYY. Enter the amount in the field with a dollar sign.

Also be careful about the dates that you have previously claimed medical expenses.  In theory you can claim 12 months back from any time during the current tax year, but I believe that claim period is required to start based on the last date that you claimed medical expenses, which could be less than 12 months.
