LaraD Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 Hello, I carried donations forward for the first time and when I review the following year tax return, the amount I did not claim is not showing up as a carryforward. Can you please help? Quote
Antoine7 Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 Hello LaraD, Re: Charitable donations - How to limit or carried forward donations You want to know how to carry forward the donations over several years and benefit from a more advantageous tax credit. As a first step, let us specify that this applies to usual charitable donations. The maximum period is 5 years. For more information on charitable donations, please consult the following links: For the federal: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-349-donations-gifts.html For Quebec: http://www.revenuquebec.ca/en/citoyen/declaration/produire/comment/aideligne/ligne395.aspx To carry forward charitable donations, please follow these steps: 1. On the "Left side menu of the Interview tab", select the "Donations/political contributions". 2. On the page generated on the right, scroll down to the "Sharing and Optimization" group and click the plus sign "+" icon to the right of the line "Sharing donations between spouses and optimization of donations". 3. On the page titled "Optimization of donations" first, go to the "Federal - Charitable donations" section. On line "Select how to distribute your family's charitable donations, choose your option the drop-down menu. NOTE: If you want to carry forward all the amount of donations, choose the option "Do not claim the donations". 4. For Quebec residents, go to the "Québec - Charitable donations and other gifts" section and to the line "Select how to distribute your family's charitable donations - Quebec" and in the drop-down menu on the right, choose your option. 5. You can also optimize the Quebec amounts of dons for cultural patronage or of a large cultural donation. Quote
LaraD Posted November 14 Author Report Posted November 14 I already did this so my tax return for the year was correct. The issue is the FOLLOWING year, Ufile is not picking up the amount I carried forward from the previous tax year. Quote
Denis K Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 Hi @LaraD, It is maybe possible the donations have been used for the previous tax year? You can confirm in the tax return under the Summary of carryforward amounts page if you see the donations are reported to the following year. If so, please make sure to save a .PDF copy of your tax return of the previous year and save the file .uXX before you carry forward the file to the following year. Otherwise, you can add the previous donations to the following year manually. Thank you, Quote
LaraD Posted November 14 Author Report Posted November 14 Thank you Denis. I'm absolutely positive that I did not use the donations in year 1. That line in my return is $0. I can also see where it shows the amount of donations to be carried forward. As I cannot seem to get the information to transfer automatically, how do I enter the previous year's donation carryforwards in my current year's tax form? I have searched but cannot find where to manually enter the information. Thanks. Quote
