How to file your 2021 tax return if you moved to Canada on December 29

Hi everyone,

I emigrated to Canada in the last days of 2021 in order to begin my postdoctoral research position on January 1, 2022. Now my issue is how I can submit my 2021 tax return. I have only been in Canada for two days in 2021. Should I report my income from my nation of origin? If yes, where should this be reflected? In the part on foreign income?

Hello MFereshtehpour,

If you lived in Canada for only part of the year, 2 days in 2021, you would file an Income Tax and Benefit Return if you: 

  • have to pay tax for the year
  • want to claim a refund
  • want to get benefit and credit payments
