stephk
Hello, Does anyone know if I can purchase an enclosed trailer for my move, if I could claim that purchase as a moving expense? It would be $6-10,000. Thanks!
Carine14
Hello @stephk In this case we suggest you to contact CRA at 1-800-959-7383. Thanks
stephk
In case anyone is wondering, I called the CRA and you can deduct the cost of a trailer if it is "reasonable". Also, the trailer would be subject to capital gains taxes if I were to sell it for more than what I paid for it.
TheTaxSmith
Hey stephk, did CRA explain what dollar amount was reasonable? Did you tell them the cost? I suspect down the road they will deny a capital acquisition as a moving expense so be careful. If you are in an area where trailer rentals are available you need to document the cost to rent versus your purchase cost. Moving expenses are usually audited by CRA so be prepared for a surprise.
