ERY1271
I've been doing my parent taxes and have their taxes carried forward. In Nov 2022 my father passed away - how do I file his final tax for 2022 using Ufile? My father is the head of the family in the their set up with my mom as the spouse. Geo123
Hello ERY1271, 1 - On the ''Left side menu on the Interview tab", select the "Identification" page and for the question "Did your marital status change in 2022 ? " reply "No change" because the deceased person does not change their marital status. 2 - Select "Interview setup" and on the right-hand side of the screen, check the box "Tax return for a deceased person" and click "Next" at the bottom of the page. 3 - On the "Left side menu on the Interview tab" a new section "Deceased" has been added, click on it and on the screen to your right, in the first field, enter the date of death and select the type of return for the year of death; Please note that you cannot file other types of returns with this program, but you can indicate if you have already filed optional returns in the "Information from optional returns for the purpose" section. 4 - Complete the data entry of the person who died. If the deceased person had a spouse, please follow the following procedure: 1 - In the file of the spouse, ''Marital status change'' will be added by the program. 2 - On the page to your right on the line "Change in your marital status in 2022" in the dropdown menu, choose the "Taxpayer became widowed" option and enter the date of death. Page 1 of both the federal and Quebec tax returns will display "Estate of the late" in the first name field, and the date of death will be noted. The federal return cannot be submitted via NETFILE, it should be printed and sent by mail in accordance with CRA regulations. However,if you are a Professional tax preparer, you can EFILE the tax return federally, while Quebec residents can file the return using NetFile.
