1. Good day Helen, You can claim the insurance premium you paid yourself as medical expense, federal (and Quebec if applicable). Verify your T4 slip (and RL-1 if applicable). There might be a Box 85 (RL-1, Box 235) with the premium you paid. If yes, enter the amount in your T4 (or T4/RL-1) page. - Box 85 is located at the bottom of the page - UFile will then use the amount as Medical expense If no, enter the amount in the Medical expenses page.

  2. Hello gkaly, The CRA has locked your account due to too many failed attempts to NetFile (5xTimes maximum). You should contact the CRA to **unlock the account ie specifically the transmission to Netfile ** and then wait at least 12 hours to NetFile. Please note there is a difference between CRA myaccount and the CRA Netfiling account and not all CRA agents are aware of this.

  3. I should also say that I used autofill extensively last year as a tax volunteer and it was extremely useful, in particular during COVID times. Many of our clients don't have good tax records, and we can't sit with them (so we can't phone the CRA - which with current wait times would be a joke - to get T slip information relayed to us verbally). If we have autofill we can get the forms done. If we don't I don't see how we are going to get it done, for these clients.

  5. Hello, this is my first year claiming CCA for our rental properties and I am having trouble figuring out what to put in these UFile Fields. I have done some preliminary research on CRA website, Google searches including watching video tutorials where applicable but I would appreciate it, if anyone can tell me what to put in the fields in the screenshot below. Some of the fields is self-explanatory (Purchase date of the property) while others are a bit tougher for me to figure out what it means exactly e.g. Opening balance of the underpreciated capital cost and ACB of of the depreciable capital property in this class. Thank you kindly!

    RRSP contribution for 2024

I am afraid so. You are allowed a lifetime RRSP overcontribution of 2000$. Any amount above this is penalized at a tax rate of 1% per month until you can alot the excess to future contribution room.

  17. What if I went over my RRSP deduction limit? If you contribute more than $2,000 over your deduction limit, you'll have to pay a tax of 1% per month on the amount you over contributed. You have 90 days after the end of the year to submit the T1-OVP 2022 Individual Tax Return for RRSP, PRPP and SPP Excess Contributions form to the CRA. You’ll use this form to calculate your penalty tax. You can lower the penalty tax by withdrawing the over-contribution from your bank account and returning it to your RRSP as soon as possible. If you want your bank to refund your over-contribution without charging the regular tax on RRSP withdrawals, you’ll need to ask the CRA to certify the over-contribution amount by filing a T3012A form right away. It might take some time, so if you don’t want to wait for a T3012A form to be approved by the CRA (which might be the case if the penalty tax is adding up) and if you don’t mind having tax withheld, you can make a regular withdrawal from your RRSP instead. Although you’ll need to report the amount you took from your RRSP as income when you file your return, you can claim an offsetting deduction so your over-contribution doesn’t raise your taxable income for the year. For example, if the rest of your taxable income this year is $50,000, and your bank refunded $10,000 of an over-contribution to your RRSP, your total taxable income without an offsetting deduction will be $60,000. However, if you claim an offsetting deduction for your over-contribution, this will bring your taxable income back down to $50,000. You can claim an offsetting deduction by submitting the T746 form when you file, as long as: You reasonably expected to claim a deduction for the contribution, either in the year you made the contribution or the year before; and You didn’t make the contribution with the plan to withdraw it later and deduct the offset amount. https://www.hrblock.ca/blog/how-it-works-rrsps-the-first-60-days-and-more/#first60

  18. Good day Raf, I understand that while in Ontario you were contributing to CPP and while in Quebec you contributed to QPP. You need two (2) Employment pages to take care of your situation. 1) a T4 income earned outside Quebec page Use that page to enter the data from your T4 Ontario (Box 10 shows ON) 2) a T4 and RL-1 income earned in Quebec with QPP contributions page Use that page to enter the data from your T4 Quebec (Box 10 shows QC) and your RL-1 Forget about Boxes B-1 and G-2 of the RL-1. They should not be there as they are required only for someone who is contributing to CPP while employed in Quebec. This is typically the case for members of the RCMP and of the military who are stationned in Quebec. You will see in your Return package Form RC381 that shows the calculations for your CPP and QPP contributions.

I have the same error and I have used u-file for years. My hubby went thru no problem. When I talked to help desk at ufile they said I tried to upload too many times so it locked. I called CRA and they confirmed my account is fine and not locked, but have not received my taxes. Called ufile help desk and once again they said call CRA and/or wait 24 hours to try again. It has been over 24 hours, CRA says the account is not locked, but when I go back into ufile to do Netfile it still comes up as locked???

  24. In case anyone is still wondering, all this means is that the spouse's taxable income (line 26000) is equal to or less than their federal non-refundable tax credits (excluding a few, such as donations and medical expenses), which means that they will have no federal tax to pay. So, if you look at the generated Schedule 2 and see that this is the case (line 36100 is $0.00), then you just answer "Yes" to the question and you are good to go. To be completely clear, this is not asserting that they have no income. It is asserting that they have no federal tax to pay.

    staycation tax credit

I appreciate what has been offered as advice, however we rented a cottage from a small operator who is not registered for HST, likely due to the fact they do not hit the minimum income limit for charging HST. Without a number, how can one make the claim? Surely there must be provision for this due to many small operators out there!

John, thank you for posting, even though that solution didn't work for you. Hope you get it solved. Here are the exact steps I took: 1) Delete the 2021 tax file 2) Open the 2020 tax file. Go to tab 4 (Tax return) 3) Download the 2020 tax return in PDF 4) Click "Settings" in top right corner, click "save & close" 5) Create the 2021 tax file. Wait for it to load for a minute or so. 6) Click "start new" file. All personal data, dependants, carry forward amounts were rolled forward.

  33. Go to your TAX RETURN review and then scroll down the left side menu. Do you an Item called 'Net Capital losses other years' ? It's on this page that I see that the system has correctly applied my carryforward amount (loss) to offset my current year gain. Note: I used the CRA autofill feature so it pulled this info in automatically. If you didnt use that feature then I would think you need to add that info in as described by Nawal further up this page. Hope this helps.

  42. Hey, @YadBanga To carry forward all the information, it is very important to save in PDF format the tax return of the Family Head from the previous tax year. If you do not already have a UFile ONLINE account, proceed as follows (otherwise proceed to step 10): 1. Go to the following web page: https://www.ufile.ca/ 2. Click on the "Start your return ONLINE FOR FREE" button and click "Create New Account". 3. Complete the form and be sure to check the box "I agree with the Terms and Conditions of the Licence agreement". 4. Click on the "Create my account" button. 5. Complete "Step 2 - Password reset options" as desired, then click "Next". 6. In "Step 3 - Finish", at the bottom of the page, print the information, than click the button "Start" from the bottom of the page. 7. Click "Go!". 8. The tax year will appear in the "Tax years list". Click "LAUNCH!" 9. Proceed to step 13 below. =========================================== However, if you already have a UFile ONLINE account, proceed as follows: 10. Go to the following web page: https://www.ufile.ca/ 11. Log in to your account; 12. Click on "Start" tab located in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. 13. Choose the option "Import an existing file" and continue with step 14 below. NOTE: Any information entered prior to conversion will be overwritten and replaced with the data carried forward from your previous year's file. If you have not entered any current year data or have no concerns about your data being overwritten, then you may proceed. If you have already prepared your return, and possibly paid for it, please do not proceed as both the data entered and the payment will be lost. Furthermore, please be aware that the conversion cannot be reversed. =========================================== 14. Click the "Browse" button, locate your 2020 UFile for Windows tax file (*.u20), and click the "Open" button. NOTE: It is very important that you browse to locate your file. This will ensure that both the name and location of the file are correct. You cannot just enter the name of the file. The program also needs to know where the file is located on your computer. By browsing, you will ensure that this information is correct. 15. If your UFile for Windows file is protected by a password, enter your password in the space provided. 16. Click the "Submit" button. 17. The file carried forward will open in UFile ONLINE. UFile | Tax Software for Canadians. Get the best tax refund. 46. Hello Goozman. Look at your last NOA for the RRSP area. You will see an Eligible RRSP amount as well as an Unused amount. The Available amount is the difference between those two. If you can access your file online at CRA you will be able to trace back over the years your RRSP contributions and deductions. Reconcile that report with your tax returns to determine what year the Unused amount started. The software will claim your current year contributions plus the unused amount and will deduct an amount up to your current eligible amount. Make sure you have entered the Unused amount to your data input section as well as your Eligible Amount and your Contributions.

  49. Just learned one more great feature about UFile: So as I mentioned above, I've had to create a completely separate account for my adult daughter. And since there is no way to automatically transfer (or even export/import) the tax data from her old account to her new one, I'm having to manually enter it. So I've opened both accounts in separate browser windows so I can copy it while viewing the old and new accounts side-by-side, and guess what? UFile can't handle it. If I have two accounts open simultaneously in different browsers, it gives me an error message that says "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation". The first time I got it, I thought it was just a random crash. Then I realized when I flipped back and forth, I couldn't move between pages. Any time I tried to change pages, I got the error message. So now I guess I'm going to go get my laptop and balance it on my desk to have one account open on my desktop and a different one open on my laptop, all because UFile can't seem to handle two accounts open simultaneously. And just so this isn't just a rant post, I'll add, "let me know if you have any solutions for this".
